Waiting for Danny to go Away

A couple of days will turn into almost a week in Port Washington NY. With the approach of tropical storm; now tropical depression Danny, we decided to sit tight here. Our next stop will be Point Lookout NY, on the south shore of Long Island to visit with Jim's Mom, before we make our way to the Chesapeake. Port Washington is a very friendly harbor with lots of conveniences; helpful harbor patrol, water taxi, grocery stores, laundromat, and town moorings. Looking forward to better weather by the beginning of next week!

Port Washington, Long Island

We spent 3 great days in Oyster Bay. This is one of the best harbors to anchor in - lots of room, very protected, nice town, market,a pumpout boat, and the home of Theodore Roosevelt. We toured Teddy's home one day - very interesting & educational. One of the best things about cruising is that you take advantage of the local historical sites. The swimming was also nice in the bay. We took advantage of that as well, since it has been quite hot. Today we moved to Port Washington in Manhasset Bay. We were able to pick up a free mooring ball, and we'll stay here for a couple of days. Tomorrow we'll meet my Uncle Mel & Aunt Estelle for lunch who live nearby.

Safe & Sound in Oyster Bay, Long Island

Last evening we arrived in Oyster Bay Harbor on Long Island after a four day run from Mattapoisett, MA in Buzzards Bay. In light of Hurricane Bill's advance North, we thought it was best to leave MA and travel as far west as we could. Fortunately, it looks like Bill is tracking more easterly as well. Oyster Bay is a VERY protected spot with great anchoring options. Our trip was broken into 4 stops; day 1 - the Sakonnet River in RI; day 2 - Newport RI; day 3 - Duck Island in Long Island Sound; day 4 - Oyster Bay; a total of about 200 miles. The trip included a variety of conditions; thick fog(for about 8 hours from Pt Judith RI past New London CT), we were very happy to have radar! biting flies, wind gusting to 30 knots, and thunderstorms (right before entering Oyster Bay). We actually did have a great sail from Duck Island to New Haven CT & also down Buzzards Bay.
Before this 4 day adventure; we spent a wonderful 4 days in Mattapoisett MA with friends Susan & Barry. We stayed on their mooring ball since their boat, "Swan" is vacationing in Stuart, FL for the summer. To celebrate Barry's birthday, we sailed with them to Lake Tashmoo on Martha's Vineyard and to Hadley Harbor MA. We rafted up with their friends Jody & Peter on "First Light" and Bill on "Loon".

The Adventure Continues - Year Two

We left Lake Ontario on August 11th 2008; and we begin year two by leaving the mooring in East Greenwich Cove RI a year later. We motored down the Sakonnet River to anchor by Third Beach near Newport. Spent the afternoon visiting Richard, Charleen, & Jack; on sistership; Azure Leizure. On Wednesday, we continued on to Cuttyhunk, MA & dropped anchor in Cuttyhunk Pond. Our plan was to go to Mattapoisett, MA today, but it is raining, and the wind is blowing in the perfect wrong direction (NE), so we will stay another night. This is a beautiful island for walking trails, and enjoying the vistas of the Elizabeth Islands & Marthas Vineyard.

Landsickness

We headed off to Central New York on 8/1/2009 in our rental car - a Chevy Aveo - that almost immediately gave Jim "Landsickness"! The experience reinforced how much he dislikes driving. Besides that we had a wonderful week. All the Doctor and Dentist appts went well. It is nice to start out year 2 on the water with peace of mind in that area. We visited with lots of friends, daughter Emily, cousins; Steve & Roseann, visited Hospice, & checked on the house. Especially appreciated the hospitality of Jim & Linda K, James & Peggy F., and Steve & Roseanne B. Arrived "home" to Kismet in RI yesterday & friends Ray & Marianne W who cared for "Kismet" while we were gone. We are very blessed to have such wonderful friends and family!
