On To Annapolis To Visit Friends & Family

After spending a pleasant night in Dun Cove on Tilghman Island, we had a great (fast) sail over to Harness Creek off of the South River, just south of Annapolis. We explored Quiet Waters Park, which led us to West Marine & Bay Ridge Wine & Liquors! The park is very beautiful & has very well maintained trails through the woods. In the afternoon, we motored 2 miles up the river to pick up a mooring ball (owned by friends)for a couple of days. We are here to visit Jonathan & Yvonne (Speranza), who actually just moved into a condo on Spa Creek. We will go to their dock on Spa Creek next week when Elena comes for a short visit on her way back to California. Sally & Conrad on "It's About Time" are also in Annapolis, and hopefully we will travel North with them at the end of next week. The latest boat repairs include switching out our alternator (we had a spare on board), and replacing our fresh water pump that works. but makes much annoying, unnecessary noise! Fortunately, it is still within the 3 year warranty period, and West Marine will exchange for a new one. It is a good thing that I save all West Marine receipts!

TACKING Up the Chesapeake in a North Wind

Jim was determined to sail yesterday; even in a North wind, so.....the tacking fest started when we turned the corner at Cove Point outside Solomons, Md. Our destination was Oxford, Md, an easy? 30 mile sail. After 10 tacks ( of a minimum of 2 miles, most were 3 - 4 miles). and 11 hours later, we had sailed 53 miles to our destination. We anchored in Town Creek in Oxford. As soon as we dinghied into shore, we meet the one person that we know from Oxford, Toby. He graciously invited us over to his home for drinks, drove us to the local market, and then we had dinner together at Schooners. Then to bed Early!

Sweltering Heat in the Chesapeake

We left Sailcraft on Saturday, June 4th. We motored 68 miles -swatting horseflies - to arrive at the bottom of the Alligator River to anchor at Tuckahoe Point for the night. We met up with Michael & Francine on "Valkyrie" who we had been looking forward to meeting; so we had radio company along the way. Next day we motored up the Alligator, had a bumpy crossing of the Albemarle, up the Pasquatank to Elizabeth City, NC; where we were stopped for Hydroplane Races for an hour or so; then motored to anchor behind Goat Island with "Valkyrie". On Monday, we went through the Dismal Swamp and made it to Portsmouth, VA to anchor at Hospital Point. After a day, to check out Norfolk, we moved over to Old Point Comfort, to set ourselves up for a day of sailing up the Chesapeake Bay. Unfortunately, there was no wind; so again the motor was our friend, and got us to Jackson Creek in Deltaville, VA where we had an unexpected fun evening with Greg & Michele from "Argonauta". The next two days we spent at Doziers Regatta Point Marina visiting Jim & Sue from "Palmetto Moon". The temperature climbed to 105 degrees! It was a sweltering 95 degrees in the boat! On to anchor again at Little Bay in Fleets Bay for the night. Yesterday, we weighed anchor at 0730, and motored again - 49 miles - to arrive in Solomons, MD, 10 minutes before a severe thunderstorm came through! The good news is that this front brought with it much cooler, more comfortable temperatures!
