We've Turned Around

After leaving Hope Town with Key Lime Tarts and chocolate cake from Vernon's Bakery & Grocery, we motored over to Tahiti Beach to anchor for the night. At low tide the sand bar is very large, and a nice walk. Next day we dinghied over to Cracker P's for lunch before departing, since the wind was blowing lightly from a good direction. We put up the code zero and headed north & west towards Marsh Harbor. The wind piped up to around 20 & and code zero came down! We had a great sail to Marsh where we are anchored near Conrad & Sally on "It's About Time". Today another boat we know, "Mon Ami", It's About Time" and us dinghied in to have lunch at "Curly Tails". We are starting to look at "windows" to sail back to the US. Possibly the begining of next week. We didn't get quite as far south as we would have liked, but there's next year.

Much Fun

Since my last post, we have been in Marsh Harbor, Man O War Cay, Guana Cay, and today we are in HopeTown (where there is great internet)! We reunioned with Conrad & Sally on "It's About Time" in Marsh Harbor. The weather has been beautiful, just too little wind on the sail over to HopeTown today.

Snorkeling at Great Guana Cay

Left Treasure Cay and sailed over to Great Guana Cay. Picked up a mooring in Fisher Bay. Didn't get off the boat all day because it rained. But yesterday was beautiful. Explored the Cay on foot in the a.m. then packed up the snorkeling stuff and went over to Nippers with Dick & Anne for a snorkeling event. Absolutely gorgeous! Then had a Nipper & a Grabber, before having brats, beans, and roasted potatoes on "Grey Hound.

Through The Whale

Spent a couple of days in Manjack Cay - very beautiful beach & went snorkeling for the first time - very cool. Met up with "Grey Hound" for dinner on "Kismet". We decided to go further South yesterday. Had an uneventful trip through "the Whale" & sailed to Treasure Cay. Set down the anchor near "Casual Class" and "Simple Pleasure". Walked over to the beautiful beach and then had a quiet evening on "Kismet".

Sailing Through the Abacos

We left Sunrise Marina in Lucaya on Sunday morning at 0730 with Grey Hound. After a calculated exit from the dock and out the channel, we had a good sail North to West End, and entered the Little Bahama Bank just south of Memory Rock. Then headed East to anchor in Great Sale Cay at around 2100, in the pitch dark. Dick and Anne had arrived about 3 hours earlier (even though they left after us!) We wanted to make tracks, so we left Grey Hound on Monday morning and headed further East. A great sail but we only made progress to anchor for the night by Yankee Cay. We launched the dinghy (that had been on deck for the crossing) and tried out the new 6 HP motor. On Tuesday we sailed to Allans-Pensacola Cay. We had a fun walk on the beach with fabulous shells everywhere. Then spent the evening with friends on The Great Catsby - We had met them two years ago in Hampton, VA. On Wednesday, we had a good sail (with 14 tacks!!!!) to Green Turtle Cay. The water is sooooo beautiful - an aquamarine color. We decided to tuck up in the Green Turtle Club & Marina for 3 nights because a front was expected to come through with 25 knot winds. They also offered a deal that all of your dining expenses are applied to your dockage - so basically we are eating well and the slip is free! Today we rented bikes to explore the island - about 2 miles out Jim's tire went flat and he had to walk back! So we decided to forget the bikes and went by dinghy to New Plymouth, a settlement on Green Turtle.

We Made It To The Bahamas

Well, yesterday was the day - the forecast looked good for at least 2 days; so we readied ourselves & Kismet and took off out Government Cut in Miami at 1600, for the 90 mile trip. We figured that it might take anywhere from 14 to 18 hours; so we planned to be in a marina near Lucaya on Grand Bahama Island sometime this morning. The dreaded Gulf Stream was not bad at all; other than the fact that we had to motor across the 40 miles; because there wasn't enough wind. But the wind did pipe up when we entered the North West Channel and the waves built up as well. This part of the trip was pretty uncomfortable, very rolly, and everything down below that wasn't nailed down, was on the cabin sole. We also had to slow down because we didn't want to reach the channel for the marina before light. We arrived at 0800, after a hairy entrance through a narrow channel with waves breaking. Grey Hound was waiting for us at the dock - they arrived yesterday. Today we will clear customs & immigration, catch a nap, wash the boat, and ourselves & then settle in here at the Sunrise Marina for a few days - at $22.75 a day that's not too bad.
