Almost Cruisers Again

After a week of relaxing and "tying up loose ends", we left Port Jefferson to do a little bit of cruising in Long Island Sound, before I leave for Los Angeles (8/17/10) for a visit with Elena, my Mom, and my sister. We decided, to head across the sound to Essex on the Connecticut River for an quick visit with Ray & Marianne from R.I. We picked up a mooring ball in Hamburg Cove, and they drove over for a few hours. It was great to see them; albeit brief. Hamburg Cove it a lovely spot, especially during the week. You can pick up a mooring for $20.00. A mile away in Essex the balls are $45 - $50.00 a night. On the way back west, we had a favorable current and were motorsailing at almost 9 knots! We sailed to Northport, L.I. and anchored just outside the mooring field. Northport is another great spot - nice town, free dinghy dock, a farmers market, laundromat, and nearby grocery stores & bagel store! Jim left me at the laundromat to do a "quick" errand. He was looking for a part for Porty's engine. He was thinking, or not thinking, that the boatyard for "just around the corner". Two hours and 6 miles later, with the laundry way past done - he finally showed up without the part because he never even got to the place! He did find Camp Alverina, the 1st Catholic camp in the country. I was ready to put out an APB for him. We will stay here tomorrow for the Farmers Market, and then head back to Port Jeff to get ready to go to the airport on Tuesday. We'll borrow Jim's brother's car to make the trip easier.
